Ternary Marker

Beverly Pepper
2003; Bronze; Sculpture
Central Campus; East side of Alumni Memorial Hall/Museum of Art and north of Tappan Hall

Part of the collections of the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Gift of Jack A. and Noreen Rounick. Ternary Marker is part of a series of sculptures Pepper has called ‘urban altars,' which combine a totemic presence with simple archetypal forms. The title alludes to its three main parts: a pyramid and inverted triangle capped by a wedge shape reminiscent of an ancient tool or ritual object. The cumulative effect of these geometric shapes is somehow anthropomorphic.” (Quoted from, and for more info, see UMMA website.) Pepper is also the artist of Triad Ritual on North Campus.
